Welcome to My Big Fat Queer Prom, a celebration of body size and sexuality. Here, the words "fat" and "queer" aren't pejoratives, they're statements of purpose. The prom-attendees' ages range from the teens to the fifties and the crowd is composed almost exclusively of women.

Everywhere you turn, there is soft flesh—large tummies and rolling cleavage—cheerfully on display. For some of the women, who've spent lifetimes ostracized for their size, or their sexual orientation, or both, tonight is an opportunity to experience the prom they never had. For others, it's just a chance to have fun. Even as official concern about obesity grows, the so-called "size acceptance" community has organized its own countermovement. Since the '60s, groups like the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance have been fighting "fat-phobia" and advocating for fat people's rights.


In 2001, San Francisco passed legislation making it illegal to discriminate based on body size, and in academic settings, fat studies—a close relative of queer studies—are gaining popularity. In 2006, the first Fat and the Academy Conference at Smith College attracted nearly 150 participants . . .

At a recent, weekend-long, "plus-size party" in Connecticut, one reveler wore a T-shirt that read: "Skinny girls are evil."As women in bikinis and men in swim trunks lounged near the pool, others danced to music with lyrics like, "You a big girl, baby, strut your stuff for the fellows like me who can't get enough."

Thirty percent of adults in America -- that's about 59 million people -- are now considered obese. As the nation's waistline grows, so do the number of plus-size parties, where large men and women confidently show off their curves.

The night club caters to plus-size customers and those who enjoy the company of plus-sized people. The founders are a girlfriend and boyfriend couple who say Reno needed a place where everyone feels comfortable. Tony Piersanti and Jean Olson have dating for a year. They got the idea for a plus-size nightclub in Reno after attending similar venues in Southern California.

"Tony's obviously much thinner than I am and we'll be in a regular club that's out there and he'll go through the crowd very easily and I will just have to sit and wait. You know, he went through a space this big and obviously I can't fit through that size," said Olson.
